A night and day in Taipei

We came to Taipei on the High Speed Rail from Tainan yesterday.  The rail covers a distance of 183 miles in an hour and 40 mins.  Jeffrey, Csaba and I took a taxi to the Grand Hyatt Hotel (right next to Taipei 101) Since the Microsoft corporate rate was sold out I was given a room at the preferred rate – the room was almost like a one bedroom apartment, with a sitting area, bedroom and a HUGE bathroom.  http://www.taipei.grand.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html
After freshening up, we met downstairs to go get some dinner – the basement of Taiper 101 has many eating places like a typical food court in any mall  We went to Din Tai Fung, the famours dumpling place (www.           .com).    While Jeffrey and Csaba had fish, pork soup and pork dumplings, I ordered taro dumplings, friend rice with only vegetables and spicy peanut noodles.  IT was great!!  We then walked around the downtown area, people watching the crowd outside many night clubs in that area.  http://www.dintaifung.com.tw/en/default.htm
This morning I decided to go up to the top of Taipei 101 and visit the National Palace Museum.  Taxis are very safe in Taiwan and strictly go by the meter.  I walked to Taipei 101 and bought the T$500 ticket to go up to the observatory.  The fast elevator took us to the 89th floor from which you can climb up to the outside observatory on the 91st floor, or walk down to the 88th floor for the elevator down.  The view from the top was spectacular – clear day, no wind, not crowded at all.  I walked around the observatory taking in the view.  http://www.taipei-101.com.tw/index_en.htm

On coming down, I flagged a taxi that took me to the National Palace Museum, for T$300.  For another 500 bucks, I got an admission tickets to the museum  The exhibits covered religious architecture, calligraphy, jade and semi precious stones, scroll art, bronze and clay sculptures.  Each exhibit was clearly labeled in English and very easy to follow.  Artifacts were from as early as 2BC.  I wanted to go the jade market in Taipei for a short visit – the information center at the museum was very very helpful.  She gave me the taxi number, and asked me to wait outside at the curb for 3 mins for the taxi to arrive.  The taxi arrived within 3 mins!!  Amazing efficiency!!  http://www.npm.gov.tw/en/

I got dropped off at the jade market, which turned out to be a bunch of shops along a block – the choices were good, but I had a lot of problems getting the prices or bargaining since no one spoke English.  Next time I need to go with someone who can speak mandarin!  Anyway, I managed to buy an amethyst bead chain and bracelet.  Hopefully it is worth T$1800 for both of them.

On the way back, I got into a taxi again, that dropped me off at Taipei 101 – I went to the supermarket to buy chocolates for home.  New Lindt chocolates that are thin sheets, gold bars, sugar free chocolates, and stuff.  Should be good for a couple of weeks!

Taiwan is fun, safe and entertaining!

Visit to Yingge, Taiwan

Today we landed at 6:15am to a bright, sunny day in Taiwan.  The flight was extremely smooth and comfortable, and I slept for 10 whole hours.  Also watched two oscar nominated movies, Hugo and War Horse..
Teddy, Yuyi and their daughter Donna picked me up at the Sheraton, Hsinchu and we drove to the ceramic village of Yingge.  Lots of shops, big and small, sold ceramic teapots, teacups, mugs, vases, planters, soup bowls, and many more items.  It was easy to distinguish the more pricey locally produced pottery from the cheaper, chinese imports.  We walked around a couple of streets, and I picked up some souvenirs.  The crowd consisted of many locals doing their Sunday shopping, as well as tourists from China!

We had lunch at a delightful vegetarian restaurant, xxxxxxxx, where I had the most amazing, spicy brown rice with kimchi.  Delicious!!  For my return, I took the High Speed Rail (HSR) from Taoyuan station to Hsinchu station, and a short cab ride (T$130) brought me back to the Sheraton.  Great day to break in jetlag!

San Diego to LA drive

Yesterday I drove by myself from San Diego to LA - I had arrived on 3/30/12 in the morning to visit the Systems and ASIC group in Qualcomm - my new assignment! Lakshmi, Srini, Siddharth and Nandita (5 & 2) were on a weeklong trip to LA, for Srini's International Relations conference. Since I had not met Nandita yet, I decided to stay over in LA and visit them.

I left work at 5:30pm, and folks told it would take 4hrs being Friday evening. It took me 3, but what a drive. The Garmin did a good job of rerouting me immediately away from I-5 to DelMar, which turned out to be a pretty drive along the coast. I passed many coastal communities with fancy eating places, while watching a beautiful golden sunset over the Pacific. So gorgeous!

Cardiff by the Sea, Encinitas, Solano Beach, etc. I joined I-5 at Cannon, and kept a good clip, but soon got turned toward 73, a toll highway, that climbed up the San Joaquin hills above Irvine. I had never been on this side before. Views were stunning, and the traffic flowed LA style - 75 and above, relentless, pounding.

Lakshmi called to invite me to dinner in Culver City, at Annapurna (10200 Venice Blvd.Culver City, CA 90232). Her cousin, Archana was also there. I enjoyed a super hot, sizzling paneer burji dosa. http://www.annapurnacuisine.com/ The kids were tired after a long evening at Santa Monica Pier, and Sidhartha fell asleep within mins. Nandita continued to lick the raita off the plate! Cute!!

STL visit - Arun's surgery (Nov 19-28, 2011)

Hmm.. this was not a planned visit to STL; Arun was supposed to come home for Thanksgiving, but here we are, to take care of him during and after his second knee surgery, to fix the ACL. This time, with his own patella tendon.

Staying at SpringHill Suites on Hanley drive. This hotel is great - rooms are suite sized; showers in bathrooms (not bathtub), modern look, close to Walmart, eating and shopping, WashU and interstate 64. We chose a room on the ground floor (108!), with in house laundry next door. VERY CONVENIENT!

Eating out everyday - tried out Olive Garden, PF Changs, House of India, CPK, Jimmy John's, King and I, Dewey's Pizza, Twin Oak Wood fire fare, etc. Baklava's from The Vine. All good.

Parents Weekend, Saint Louis 10/21-23, 2011

It has been a fun weekend in Saint Louis, visiting Arun at WashU. Been 8 weeks since we dropped him off for college, back in August, 2011. Now he is the one giving driving directions to the local favorites.

Instead of doing the suggested tours, seminars around campus, Arun and I spent most of our time talking, eating out and shopping. When he was in class or getting work done in his dorm, I waited for him at my favorite spot on campus, Cafe Bergson at the Danforth Center. Deep comfortable cushioned chairs, ottomans, and the smell of coffee lend a perfect ambience for working, reading or just a quick nap!

Bay area chain restaurants having a presence in Saint Louis are Maggiano's, California Pizza Kitchen and we had dinner (Thursday) and Lunch (Friday). Arun was really craving some Indian food, so it was dinner (Friday) at House of India, on Delmar and 170. The mild paneer makhni, bhaigan bhartha, onion and garlic naans, and mango milkshake were slowly polished off our plates. Now, why didn't he ask for sambar and dosai?? Next door was Jilly's Cup Cakes and Cafe, the winner of third season of Food Network's Cup Cake wars! Sadly though, they were closed at 10pm!! Need to come back again.

No visit to WashU is complete without a trip to "The Loop", a collection of bars, eating places and furniture shops! We went to Ranoush for lunch (Saturday), and decided to check out Jilly's again. This time, we found the place bustling with folks having lunch, coffee or enjoying one of their jumbo cupcakes! Arun chose their "Pink velvet cake" (CAKE: Pink velvet, STUFFING: Caramel
TOPPING: Cream cheese, caramel buttercream and pecan praline), and I went for the "Space monkey" (CAKE: Banana-Toffee, STUFFING: Toffee Dulce de Leche, TOPPING: Caramel Cream Cheese Swirl & Chocolate Astronaut Ice Cream); both had filledcenters, layers of frosting and topped by pecan pralines or chocolate! Yum! Here are the links:

Shopped at Bed Bath and Beyond, Macys for dorm storage, winter jackets and warm clothing. Saint Louis is in the grips of following their team the STL Cardinals, in the World Series, against the Texas Rangers, and many locals everywhere we sporting team jerseys and colors. We watched Game 3 at Shekar's home; Albert Pujols put on a mightly show with a record tying three homers to defeat the Rangers 16-7!!

I visited Shekar, Akila, Mama, Mami, Arjun and Arya at home Sat. morning. Both kids had a busy schedule, with soccer, violin, piano, tennis, birthday party. Arjun's last game of the season was fun to watch in the mildly cold Missouri morning! Arya was comfortable on my lap!!
